Curate and publish a niche newsletter using AI for research, writing, and growth

Skills to bring or develop

  • Writing
  • Content Curation
  • Email Marketing
  • Audience Building

The starting sequence

  1. Pick newsletter niche
  2. Set up email platform
  3. Create AI writing workflow
  4. Grow subscriber list
  5. Monetize with ads and sponsors

What the work involves

You need a specific niche you genuinely understand, enough writing sense to edit AI output until it sounds human, and the patience to publish consistently when open rates feel invisible. AI handles the heavy lifting on research and first drafts, but you're the editor, the taste-maker, and the person who decides what actually matters to your readers. The work is less about writing and more about curation judgment — knowing what to cut, what to spotlight, and why your take is worth someone's inbox. You'll also need to learn the basics of email deliverability, list growth, and eventually monetization. None of that is hard, but all of it takes longer than the YouTube thumbnails suggest.

Prepare your AI newsletter business for sale, acquisition, or hands-off operation

  1. Create comprehensive standard operating procedures covering every repeatable process in your AI newsletter business — client onboarding, delivery workflows, billing, and support. A buyer needs to run this without you.

Target deliverable: Complete SOP handbook with video walkthroughs

Tool examples: Notion, Loom, Google Docs

Planning allowance: 12 hours · AI can assist; review the output

  2. Record the questions this step raises for your business, location, and circumstances. Confirm requirements and assumptions with current official sources and a qualified professional before acting.

Target deliverable: Valuation estimate with supporting financials

    Tool examples: Google Sheets, ChatGPT

Planning allowance: 6 hours · AI can assist; review the output

  3. Organize all financial records, contracts, customer data, IP documentation, and legal documents into a virtual data room that a buyer or their advisor can review.

Target deliverable: Organized virtual data room

Tool examples: Google Drive, Google Sheets

    Planning allowance: 10 hours

  4. Identify every area where the business depends on you personally. Delegate, automate, or document each one. Test by taking 2 weeks off and measuring impact.

Target deliverable: Owner dependency scorecard (before/after)

    Tool examples: Notion, Zapier, Slack

    Planning allowance: 20 hours

  5. Create a teaser document (blind profile) for your AI newsletter business and either list on marketplaces (Acquire.com, Flippa, Quiet Light) or reach out directly to 5-10 potential acquirers.

Target deliverable: Teaser document + 5-10 buyer conversations started

Tool examples: Acquire.com, Google Docs, Email

Planning allowance: 8 hours · AI can assist; review the output

Draft a full newsletter issue from a list of source links
You are the editor of a niche newsletter called [NEWSLETTER NAME] for an audience of [DESCRIBE AUDIENCE, e.g. 'indie SaaS founders who want to grow without VC funding']. I'm going to paste in 5-8 links and brief notes. Your job is to:

1. Write a short, punchy intro (3-5 sentences, first person, warm tone) that ties the week's theme together
2. Summarize each link in 2-4 sentences — lead with the insight, not the source
3. Add one 'So what?' sentence after each summary that tells the reader why this matters to THEM specifically
4. Write a closing 'One thing to try this week' section (1 actionable tip, 3-5 sentences)
5. Suggest a subject line and a preview text (under 90 characters)

Tone: [DESCRIBE YOUR TONE, e.g. 'smart but not academic, like a knowledgeable friend texting you']. Do not use corporate jargon. Do not pad with filler.

Here are this week's sources:

Review requirements: Separate supplied facts from assumptions. Do not invent market data, customer results, testimonials, or source citations. Flag missing information and suggest a small validation test. Mark numerical examples as scenarios. Keep the final decision with me.
Find and validate a profitable newsletter niche before you build anything
I want to start a niche email newsletter as a side business. Help me validate whether this niche is worth pursuing before I invest time in it.

Niche I'm considering: [DESCRIBE YOUR NICHE, e.g. 'AI tools for real estate agents']

Please give me:
1. A realistic audience size estimate and why this niche might be underserved or overcrowded
2. Three specific monetization angles that actually work for this audience (be honest if they're unlikely to pay)
3. Five adjacent newsletter or media brands already serving this space — and what gap I could fill
4. Three red flags that would mean I should pivot the niche
5. A suggested narrow positioning statement I could use on my landing page (one sentence, specific)

Be direct. If the niche is too broad or too small, say so and suggest a better angle.

Write a 30-day content calendar and subject line bank
I run a weekly email newsletter called [NEWSLETTER NAME] in the niche of [YOUR NICHE]. My audience is [DESCRIBE AUDIENCE]. I publish every [DAY OF WEEK].

Create:
1. A 30-day content calendar showing 4 issue themes with a one-line description of what each issue covers
2. For each issue, write 3 subject line options — one curiosity-driven, one benefit-driven, one ultra-direct
3. A list of 10 recurring content formats I can rotate (e.g. 'Tool of the week', 'Founder story', 'Stat that surprised me') that fit this specific niche
4. Three sponsorship pitch angles I could use when reaching out to advertisers relevant to this audience

Keep subject lines under 50 characters where possible. No clickbait. These readers are smart and will unsubscribe if tricked.

Review requirements: Separate supplied facts from assumptions. Do not invent market data, customer results, testimonials, or source citations. Flag missing information and suggest a small validation test. Mark numerical examples as scenarios. Keep the final decision with me.
Write a cold outreach email to land a newsletter sponsor
I need to write a cold outreach email to land a paid sponsor for my email newsletter.

My newsletter details:
- Name: [NEWSLETTER NAME]
- Niche: [YOUR NICHE]
- Subscriber count: [NUMBER]
- Average open rate: [OPEN RATE %]
- Click rate: [CLICK RATE %]
- Publish frequency: [WEEKLY/BIWEEKLY]
- Typical reader profile: [DESCRIBE IN 1-2 SENTENCES]

The company I'm pitching: [COMPANY NAME AND WHAT THEY SELL]
Why they're a fit: [1 SENTENCE ON WHY THEIR PRODUCT FITS MY AUDIENCE]

Write a cold email that:
1. Is under 150 words
2. Leads with audience value, not my subscriber count
3. Includes one specific reason why this sponsor fits THIS audience
4. Has a single clear ask (a 15-minute call or a reply with interest)
5. Does not use phrases like 'I hope this finds you well' or 'synergy'

Write two versions: one casual, one slightly more formal.

Review requirements: Separate supplied facts from assumptions. Do not invent market data, customer results, testimonials, or source citations. Flag missing information and suggest a small validation test. Mark numerical examples as scenarios. Keep the final decision with me.

Problems to plan for

Use these playbook prompts to question your plan. Pricing, channels, and delivery models should be tested with your own customers.

Picking a niche that's interesting to you but has no monetization path

Before you write issue one, identify at least three companies that already advertise to this audience (check Sponsorgap.com or look at similar newsletters' ad slots). If you can't find three, the niche is likely too small or too non-commercial to monetize.

Publishing inconsistently in the first 90 days

Write and schedule the first four issues before you launch. Set a non-negotiable publish day. If life gets in the way, send a shorter issue — even 200 words — rather than skip. Use AI to draft faster when you're short on time.

Monetizing too early with ads before building engagement

Wait until you have 500+ subscribers and a 35%+ open rate before pitching sponsors. Use that early period to test paid subscriptions via a 'founding member' offer to your most engaged readers instead — it's more honest and often more profitable at small scale.

Relying entirely on AI-written content without adding personal perspective

The rule: AI drafts, you edit and inject. Every issue needs at least one original opinion, personal story, or contrarian take that only you could write. This is your moat. It takes 15-20 extra minutes and is the difference between a newsletter people forward and one they delete.

Building on a free platform without owning your subscriber list

Always export your subscriber list monthly as a CSV backup regardless of platform. Ideally, use an ESP (email service provider) where you own the list outright — Beehiiv, Kit (formerly ConvertKit), or Mailchimp. Substack is fine to start but migrate before you have 2,000+ subscribers.

Your first small test

  1. Choose one customer. Find five people who have the problem described in this guide.
  2. Show one useful sample. Ask about their current process, priorities, and objections.
  3. Offer a clearly scoped pilot. Agree on deliverables, a price to test, and what success means.
  4. Record the evidence. Track responses, costs, hours, and what the buyer actually used. Decide whether to continue, change, or pause.
