What It Actually Took

The work behind
the finished thing.

Use real records to understand the time, money, revisions, and ongoing responsibility behind a project.

Real build record · October 9, 2026

What went into the First Experiment Planner?

Read the delivered scope, tools, design choices, testing approach, and ongoing work. Time and shared subscription costs remain unmeasured and unallocated.

Read the implementation record

A polished result leaves out much of the work that made it possible. This series gives that work a place: choosing the scope, preparing inputs, reviewing AI output, revising, publishing, reaching people, and maintaining what you made.

Start with a record you can trust

Log time when you can. Save the basis for a cost. If you reconstruct something later, label it as an estimate and explain the method. Leave an unknown empty instead of treating it as zero.

The worksheet below is a blank template. It does not contain Ashley’s spending or a claim about what your project should cost.

What belongs in the record?

  • Project work: research, planning, writing, design, implementation, and review.
  • Rework: revisions, failed attempts, debugging, and correction.
  • Tools and purchases: actual charges with the date and source.
  • Distribution and support: outreach, conversations, help, and follow-up.
  • Maintenance: updates, checks, and recurring responsibilities.

Handle shared costs consistently

If a subscription supports several ventures, record that fact. You might allocate a documented share to a project or report it separately as portfolio overhead. State the method and avoid counting the same charge more than once.

Compare like with like

Keep cash paid separate from your own time. Record revenue only when you have a record and state whether it is booked, collected, refunded, or otherwise qualified. A simple cash balance does not automatically represent accounting profit.

For a prospective offer, the experiment calculator can help model assumptions. Label that as a scenario and keep it distinct from your actual log.

A useful cost story needs context

When sharing a result, include the project scope, dates, tools, human review, delivery limits, and what remains ongoing. Readers should be able to see which parts they could reasonably repeat and which depend on your skills or starting point.

No measured time or cost report is published for the new founder-journal release yet. The publishing walkthrough documents the process and verification that are available.
