A new project does not need an enterprise reporting stack. It needs enough information to tell whether a small experiment deserves another week. Begin with four records: what you spent, how long you worked, what relevant people did, and what money was actually received. Platform metrics add context to those records; they do not replace them.
Learn the common abbreviations
| Term | Meaning and arithmetic |
|---|---|
| Impressions and reach | Impressions are displays; reach estimates distinct people or accounts. Repeat exposure makes them different. |
| CTR | Click-through rate: destination clicks divided by impressions, multiplied by 100. |
| CPC and CPM | Cost per click is spend divided by clicks. Cost per thousand impressions is spend divided by impressions, multiplied by 1,000. |
| Conversion rate | A named action divided by a named eligible group, multiplied by 100. “Orders per measured session” is a clear label. |
| CPL and CPA | Cost per lead and cost per acquisition/action. State exactly what qualifies as each. |
| ROAS | Attributed sales revenue divided by advertising spend. It excludes many business costs. |
| CAC | The defined full cost of acquiring customers divided by new customers, with the cost boundary stated. |
| KPI | A key performance indicator: a selected measure that helps you judge an important objective. |
Work out one small test
Suppose you spend $30 distributing a digital-template offer. The fictional campaign records 3,000 impressions, 60 clicks, 45 measured sessions and three $12 orders. CTR is 2%, CPC is $0.50, CPM is $10, and session-to-order conversion is about 6.7%. Revenue is $36 and ROAS is 1.2×. Media cost per order is $10.
Now include $4 in payment and platform fees and $8 of other directly attributable expenses. The test produces negative $6 before fixed costs, tax and your labor. If it took four hours, you should also record those hours rather than describing the result as passive income. This is arithmetic for a hypothetical experiment, not an earnings forecast or a claim about any Wealth Experiment venture.
Choose indicators for your current stage
Before anybody visits, track relevant distribution attempts and whether the intended person reached the page. Before anybody buys, track sample use, suitable inquiries and concrete objections. Once sales occur, track collected revenue, refunds, delivery effort and repeat purchases where relevant. A follower count can provide context, but it cannot substitute for demand or profitability.
Email list size and open rate also need care. Some privacy and automated-fetch behavior can affect opens. Replies, confirmed subscriptions, useful link activity and subsequent customer actions can offer different evidence. Keep the denominator visible and do not add social audiences together as though every account represents a different person.
Make uncertainty visible
With three sales, one refund materially changes the picture. Keep counts beside rates and resist treating early percentages as stable benchmarks. No recorded visits makes a visit-based conversion rate unavailable. No ad spending makes ROAS undefined for practical reporting; it does not make your time free. An empty field means you lack a measurement, not that performance was zero.
Compare equivalent periods and avoid averaging percentages across groups of different sizes. Keep observations separate from forecasts. If a tool estimates future sales from a chosen conversion rate, label the rate as an assumption until you have evidence.
Maintain a weekly experiment card
Write the hypothesis, dates, cash spent, total hours, relevant visits, meaningful actions, orders, revenue and refunds on one page. Add the strongest customer observation and choose continue, change or pause. The point is to make a sensible next commitment within your limits. You can add sophisticated reporting after the basic records are reliable and the decision actually requires it.
