The useful starting point
Agents can work through tasks, a harness defines the tools and controls available, MCP connects compatible services, and skills encode repeatable procedures. The real founder questions are permissions, operating costs, approvals and evidence of customer value.
A new tool can make a solo founder feel like a ten-person company. But labels such as agent, skill or computer use describe different capabilities, and the differences determine your operating costs and risk. Here is a founder-focused glossary with eight terms that are worth translating into business decisions.
The words that describe who does the work
Agent
A multi-step helper that might research a customer question, draft a response and request approval.
Business decision: Define which steps can run unattended and which would affect a customer or account.
MCP
A compatibility standard for connecting assistants with authorized data and tools.
Business decision: Verify that the connector provides the actual capability you need; connection is not the same as permission.
Harness
The surrounding runtime, tool access and controls that allow a model to work toward a task.
Business decision: Ask how errors are surfaced, how progress is checked and when the system stops.
Skill
A reusable procedure, such as a checklist for producing a customer onboarding report.
Business decision: Store the instructions with the output format, source requirements and quality criteria.
Loop engineering
Design of retry, feedback and stop logic when an assistant performs repeated steps.
Business decision: Do not pay for infinite retries; set limits and an owner for unresolved problems.
The words that describe the interface and the market
Computer use
An AI system clicking and typing in an application as a person would.
Business decision: Use test accounts first. Require approval for payments, emails and account changes.
GEO / AEO
Methods intended to make authoritative business information useful in search answers and AI responses.
Business decision: Track whether customers discover and trust you; visibility itself is not revenue.
AGI / superintelligence
Contested concepts about broad general intelligence and capability beyond humans.
Business decision: Do not base a business plan on either label or unverified claims about a product's intelligence.
Illustrative use case: an estimate-follow-up assistant
Imagine offering a contractor a service that reminds the contractor to review open estimates. The customer provides a permissioned export. A skill defines how to identify overdue estimates without inventing dates. A harness gives the assistant access to the file and limits it to preparing drafts. MCP might provide a suitable data connection, if both systems support it. An agent could inspect the records and compose follow-up suggestions, but a human approves each outbound message.
A feedback loop checks for bad records, duplicates and stale contact details; it stops on errors instead of sending increasingly confident messages. Computer use may be unnecessary when a stable API or manual export works. This is a design example, not a claim of an existing deployed service.
An anti-jargon test for your next product idea
- Can you say what the buyer receives without naming an AI feature?
- Can the system operate using only the minimum necessary customer information?
- Is the approval boundary clear for transactions or public messages?
- Do you know the full cost of retries, support, hosting and maintenance?
- What experiment would show the customer values the outcome?
Use AI terminology to write a better product specification
Translate this side-hustle idea into an operational plan: [idea]. Label where an ordinary script is enough, where a language model helps, where tools or MCP access are required, whether a reusable skill adds value, and which actions need a human approval gate. Set failure and cost limits. Do not claim demand, integrations or income without evidence.
The idea-revival worksheet can help you choose a smaller first test. If you want to build and validate an offer with support, see Two Mondays to a Side Hustle. The test is whether someone needs your result, not whether your pitch contains the latest acronym.

Questions you might be asking
Do I need agents to build an AI side hustle?
Usually not at first. A manual service, simple workflow or one model-assisted step can be enough to validate the buyer's need.
What is an MCP server for a founder?
It can expose approved tools or information to a compatible AI client, subject to the integration and permissions available.
How does AEO or GEO make money?
Neither guarantees sales. They concern how content can appear in answer experiences; measure discovery, qualified engagement and real orders separately.
